Saori Doi is a contemporary artist born in Aichi Prefecture. After completing her master’s degree in Japanese Painting at Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2010, she established her creative studio in Yamagata.Doi constructs a highly tactile and physical ground by layering cheesecloth over wood panels and coating them with plaster, iron oxide (bengala), and traditional mineral pigments. Featuring expressive motifs of humans and animals, her work aims to resurrect primitive folk sensibilities, mythological imagination, and ritualistic worlds of prayer within the framework of contemporary painting.Through her powerful, organic mark-making that reawakens tactile memories, Doi’s art bridges ancient human animism with modern visual expressions, earning her widespread critical acclaim both in Japan and internationally.
