This exhibition considers KOGEI as a living and evolving cultural practice, exploring its enduring possibilities in the present day. Working with materials such as clay, wood, metal leaf, and mineral pigments, the participating artists engage deeply with inherited techniques and the layers of knowledge embedded within them, while developing new forms of expression. Rather than positioning tradition and innovation as opposing forces, the exhibition highlights creative practices shaped through the dialogue between human hands and materials. Through a diverse range of works, it presents a vision of KOGEI that continues to evolve, connecting cultural memory with future possibilities.

Gallery concept

MEDEL GALLERY SHU focuses on the creative potential embedded in materials and craftsmanship, presenting artistic practices that move fluidly between contemporary art and KOGEI. Grounded in a deep respect for inherited techniques and material cultures, the gallery works with artists whose practices connect past and present, tradition and innovation. Through the dialogue between people and materials, it seeks to cultivate and communicate new forms of cultural value. Viewing art not as a fixed category but as a living cultural practice that continues to evolve over time, the gallery explores the possibilities that emerge from this ongoing exchange. In 2025, MEDEL GALLERY SHU opened a gallery space in Hibiya dedicated to three-dimensional practices in contemporary art and contemporary KOGEI, further deepening its commitment to material-based expression and craft-informed artistic discourse.To discover values that will be passed down through generations.
