Hiroto Rakusho is a foil artist and certified Traditional Craftsman of Nishijin weaving, born in Kyoto in 1962.He has elevated “hikihaku”—the traditional Kyoto technique of applying thin metal foil—into the realm of contemporary art. By applying heat and unique chemical treatments to gold and silver leaf, Rakusho developed non-tarnishing foils and brilliant color variations derived from controlled chance. His immersive installations, such as the iconic series “Mu” featuring a monumental 150cm-diameter moon sculpture, orchestrate profound, deeply poetic spaces of light and shadow. From restoring prized national cultural properties to collaborating with major global luxury brands, Rakusho seamlessly bridges ancient legacy with contemporary visions, pushing the tactile boundaries of metal foil into the future.
