Murata’s bold expression is expressed through decorative and detailed ceramics filled with a feminine sensibility. Murata uses “kneading,” a technique in which clay colors are mixed one by one and joined together to form a regular pattern. She further combines petal-like sections that have been cut off so that a pattern appears on the cross section. The resulting works look like plants or strange creatures, and the patterns are reminiscent of the structure of cells under a microscope. The seemingly glamorous works, with their beautiful patterns and colors, actually have a poisonous quality to them. The poison Murata refers to is our “greed,” “jealousy,” “envy,” and “ambition. She believes that this poison is the charm of human beings, and that life grows by feeding on it.
