Murata develops bold ceramic works characterized by an ornate, highly detailed aesthetic with a distinctly feminine sensibility. She works with nerikomi, a technique in which differently colored clays are individually prepared and carefully joined to create precise, repeating patterns. The assembled clay is then cut and recombined, petal-like sections revealing intricate motifs in cross-section. The resulting sculptures evoke plants or fantastical living forms, while their patterns recall the cellular structures seen under a microscope.
