Muta was born in Tokyo in 1981, and graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London with a BA in Fine Arts, beginning her making career in the UK.
On returning to Japan, Muta further trained at the Ishikawa Prefecture Kutani-ware Technical Training Institute, and currently works from her studio in Nomi city. Muta’s creative work includes tableware, tea bowls and various ‘art’ works which are all intensely decorated with animals and plants in both actual and mythical forms that have been historically stylised in subjective reconstructions. Her interest is centred on the idea and technical aspects of “decoration” in Iroe Jiki (porcelain decorated with polychrome enamel overglaze) that challenges the notions of “crafts” and “fine art” with a self-critical consciousness of “Japanese aesthetics”.
