Gallery concept
YOD Gallery presents artworks by rising artists from Kansai and western Japan. These creators have mastered traditional Japanese craft, and are reinventing the boundaries of expression that are achievable with their chosen medium. Nobuyuki Ogawa grew up in a family of Kiyomizu Ware potters, and utilizes overglaze techniques which Kyoto is famous for, to create his works which combine tradition and progress, whereas Yoko Miki mainly uses black and white in her thoughtful pieces. Likewise ceramic artists Shigeki Minami, Manami Okaysu, and Rio Kawase are testing the barriers of expression achievable with porcelain. Malaya Koga’s gorgeous copper works also encompass traditional metalwork and patina, the latter of which is especially effective in giving the pieces a timeless appeal. Arata Higuchi uses traditional Japanese painting mediums, but his pointillist approach renders an internationally appealing expression for his pictures of colourful reptiles. Stitch Dog creates embroidery inspired by circuit boards, presenting a unique world with her craft.
