Yohei Chimura (b. 1984, Chiba, Japan) graduated from the Glass Certification Studies
Program at the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art in 2012 and received his Ph.D. majoring
in Glass from Tokyo University of Arts in 2015.
Chimura studied traditional metal casting and glass-forming techniques and currently
creates work that focuses on the beginnings and moments of material transformation.
Drawing on the inherent characteristics of his materials—such as the flow of molten
metal under heat, or the deformation and solidification of glass and plastic through thermal
exchange—he incorporates the very process of change into his work. Through
cycles in which form emerges, disappears, and regenerates, he explores the boundaries
between destruction and creation, between the natural and the artificial. By embracing
both the beauty and the fragility hidden within transformation, his practice reconsiders
the relationship between material, environment, and the human being. His work has
been exhibited at institutions including the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art,
Kanazawa; the Suntory Museum of Art; and the Toyama Glass Art Museum. From 2025,
Chimura serves as Associate Professor in the Glass Course at the Faculty of Fine Arts,
Tokyo University of the Arts.
