ARTIST INFORMATION
Dame Lucie Rie was an Austrian-born studio potter. Her early incorporated the aesthetics of Wiener Werkstätte and Bauhaus Modernism. She emigrated from Nazi’s Austria to England in 1938, initially working in the glass buttons factory to make a living but later produced fine ceramic buttuns in her studio, where in 1946 the German-born war-emigre Hans Coper joined to work. With his help, she found her way to follow her own modernist style. Their strong friendship lasted until Coper’s death in 1981. She developed a wide range of glaze effects on both stoneware and porcelain. Her sophisticated, often brightly colored thrown pots are endowed with beauty beyond time and place. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of British Empire in 1991. Her work is in collections around the world, including V&A Museum and the York Art Gallery in UK, the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
